A cloud computing solution was the perfect choice for Aston International who were spending too much time monitoring and managing on-premise IT. Photo shows Adrian Cowin, IT Manager at Aston.
Established 39 years ago, Aston International is a fully-licensed, independent corporate and trust service provider. Employing 25 staff, Aston serves a diverse range of global clients from its Isle of Man headquarters. Adrian Cowin is responsible for ensuring IT systems at Aston run smoothly and securely.
“IT has enabled our business to significantly improve productivity over the last 10 years but the complexity and cost of maintaining on-premise infrastructure was becoming a headache.” said Adrian, “At many smaller businesses there is typically only one person responsible for managing IT and that’s me at Aston! Ensuring system uptime, keeping on top of software updates, making sure backups and Disaster Recovery work correctly and protecting systems against cyber threats were progressively taking up more of my time, which meant that finding time for important planning, project work and desktop support was increasingly difficult, especially when I was away from the office.”
Aston’s self-managed cloud infrastructure which featured a fully virtualised environment was cutting edge in its day, but was now coming up for refresh and this presented Adrian with an opportunity to think differently.
“Never mind the time I would spend managing and monitoring the new infrastructure, the time it would take to specify, procure and install it was daunting, especially sorting out complex Microsoft and VMware licensing! Then there was the significant capital outlay required for both hardware and licensing!”
“Whilst IT is an enabler for our business, we realised that my time would be better spent focussing on projects such as improving how we use our business applications, rather than managing and monitoring the infrastructure myself.” Said Adrian.’ Enter Synapse360 who introduced Adrian to their secure cloud platform.
“The Synapse360 Cloud offered lots of benefits for a business of our size including access to the latest high performing technology, improved data protection and resilience, greater flexibility and no more capital outlay, just a predictable monthly cost.” Said Adrian, “Mostly importantly it would free us up to focus on our customers and provide us with a reliable support capability even when I was away from the office.”
Following a proof of concept and hearing testimonials from other satisfied Synapse360 customers, Aston made the move to the cloud. “It was a bit disconcerting at first giving up direct control of the infrastructure, but Synapse360’s Network Operations Centre have responded efficiently to any issues or concerns I had. Staff noticed the improvements in desktop performance straight away.” Commented Adrian, “In fact the service just runs smoothly and the amount of time I need to spend checking spam, and ensuring that backups and replications are working has dramatically reduced.” With the Synapse360 Cloud security is taken care of too.
“Synapse360 use enterprise grade firewalls which is something we couldn’t normally afford.” Said Adrian. “Backup and protection are also improved with data now securely held in an external Tier 3 data centre and backed up in a secondary site, both on Island. We now have a reliable, secure, resilient high performing solution that requires minimal management from us. Support from Synapse360 is highly knowledgeable and always responsive. Now I have more time to concentrate on important project work and I can take leave and enjoy my time off safe in the knowledge that Synapse360 will resolve any issues in my absence.”
“If I take into consideration the overall costs of purchasing and maintaining physical infrastructure over the next five years and contrast that to the cost of our cloud subscription, there’s not much in it. However, that doesn’t take into account that with the cloud we benefit from a significant increase in productivity and have an expert IT team on hand to call on when required.”
